Most of us would love a brighter smile — whether that means a subtle refresh or a noticeably whiter result.
Professional tooth whitening is one of the simplest and most conservative ways to enhance your smile. It changes the colour of your natural teeth without changing their shape or structure.
When properly assessed, prescribed and supervised by a dental professional, whitening is a safe and predictable treatment.
And one of the things I particularly like about home whitening is that you stay in control of the final result. You can stop when you reach a natural shade you love, or continue towards a brighter, more “Hollywood” finish.
How does whitening actually work?
We first make custom-made trays designed specifically for your teeth, with small reservoirs that keep the whitening gel in the right place.
The gel contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These ingredients travel into the tooth and break down the coloured molecules that make teeth appear yellow or darker.
Rather than removing staining from the surface, professional whitening lightens the natural colour of the tooth from within.
During your appointment, we show you exactly how to apply the gel and use your trays. Both systems also come with straightforward instructions to follow at home.
Before you start
Your teeth and gums should be healthy before whitening.
Good oral hygiene is really important, and I often recommend GBT with AIRFLOW before starting to remove biofilm and coffee staining and give us the best starting point for your whitening.
What does the whitening process look like?
The process is straightforward. We assess your teeth and gums, prepare your custom-made trays, show you exactly how to use them and support you throughout the whitening process.
Once you reach the shade you are happy with, your trays are yours to keep for future top-ups.
Day whitening or night whitening?
Both can give excellent results — the main difference is how they fit into your routine.
Day whitening usually uses hydrogen peroxide and is worn for a shorter period during the day. Night whitening usually uses carbamide peroxide, which releases more gradually and is worn for several hours or overnight.
Neither is automatically better. We choose the option based on your routine, starting shade and preferences.
What about sensitivity?
Some patients notice temporary sensitivity during whitening, but it is usually straightforward to manage.
Professional systems are designed with sensitivity in mind, and we can adjust your routine if needed. We monitor you throughout, and you can always contact us if you need advice or support.
What actually works — and what doesn’t?
There are plenty of products promising whiter teeth, but they do very different things.
Whitening toothpaste removes surface staining but cannot significantly change the natural colour of your teeth.
Whitening strips may give a small improvement, but in the UK over-the-counter products contain much lower peroxide levels than dentist-prescribed whitening, so the results tend to be more subtle and less predictable.
LED and laser whitening still rely on peroxide gel — the light or laser itself is not what changes the colour of the tooth.
For predictable whitening, the key is properly fitted trays, the right professional gel and the correct wear time.
Boutique or Enlighten
Both are excellent and widely used professional whitening systems, with slightly different approaches.
Boutique Whitening
Boutique is effective and flexible. You can choose between daytime or overnight whitening, depending on what suits your routine.
Its whitening gels contain potassium nitrate, which helps manage sensitivity, and you can gradually whiten until you reach the shade you are happy with.
Enlighten
Enlighten uses a structured day and night whitening protocol with a strong focus on predictability and sensitivity management.
It includes dedicated sensitivity-support products and is known for its B1 shade guarantee when the full protocol is followed.
Enlighten gels are also kept refrigerated throughout transportation, which helps maintain their stability and freshness before they reach you.
Storage matters with both systems. Enlighten gel should be kept refrigerated, while Boutique recommends keeping the gel in the fridge or in a cool, dark place. Keeping the gel cool and away from heat and light helps preserve its stability and shelf life.
Will whitening work if I have bonding, crowns, veneers or implants?
Whitening changes the colour of natural teeth only. Composite bonding, fillings, crowns, veneers and implant crowns will stay the same shade.
But whitening can still be very useful if only some of your teeth are restored. Natural teeth can gradually darken over time while restorations stay the same colour, so occasional whitening can help maintain a more even shade across your smile.
If you are planning new bonding, veneers or other cosmetic work, we would usually whiten first and then match the new restorations to your chosen shade.
How long does whitening last?
Whitening results can last a long time, and maintaining them is usually very straightforward.
Once you’ve invested in your custom trays, you keep them. When your smile needs a refresh, you can simply buy some extra whitening gel from your dental practice and do a top-up at home.
How often you need this depends on your lifestyle and things such as coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.
The most important thing to remember
Professional whitening is safe, straightforward and highly controllable when properly supervised.
You decide how bright you want to go, your custom trays can be reused for future top-ups, and buying extra gel when you need it is easy.
It is one of the easiest ways to make a noticeable difference to your smile while preserving your natural teeth.
